Weather and Snow

Here in central Iowa (as well as the entire Midwest) we are experiencing bitter cold weather, following an autumn of balmy days and spectacular color displays.  Today the high was 19 degrees F. and our expected low will be 5 degrees.

We got three inches of dry, fluffy snow that has blanketed everything and transformed the bleak face of winter with the pristine beauty of its purity.  Our chickens stayed locked in their houses today and they didn't seem to mind.  They usually like to storm out the door as soon as it is opened and run and fly about.  However, they don't like going barefoot in the snow.  The goats and ponies, on the other hand, seem to relish the cold and snow.  They are covered with fur coats and they prance and race about like children at play.

I am more like the chickens.  I would rather stay by the fire and knit or read or just stretch out in the recliner chair with a little dog beside me and one or more cats on top sharing their body heat.
